Why hotel/motel cancellation policies are different than bed & breakfasts

Because hotels/motels are very different than bed and breakfasts—their cancellation policies are generally different too.

Here are some of ther reasons why:

Location

Hotels/Motels:
Because most hotels/motels are located in high traffic, commercial areas, often along highways—they are generally able to fill last minute cancellations with last minute walk-ins.

Bed & Breakfasts: Because most bed and breakfasts are located away from the hustle and bustle (sometimes in residential neighborhoods) most have few to no last minute walk-ins.

In fact, many b&b's receive the majority of their bookings 1 to 6 months in advance making filling rooms cancelled less than 30 days in advance virtually impossible.

Property Size

Hotels/Motels
: Because most hotels/motels are comparatively large (between 50 and 1000 rooms) a canceled reservation only represents .01% to 2% of their room inventory.

Bed & Breakfasts: Because most bed & breakfasts are smaller, more intimate properties (5 guest rooms or less) one canceled reservation may be 20% to 25% of their room inventory.

They Don't Know How to Hold the Reservation

Hotels/Motels
: As a part of yield management, major hotel/motel chains overbook to offset expected last minute cancellations and no shows.

Therefore, even though you provided a credit card to guarantee your room—the hotel/motel is not required to hold your room.

Remember the Seinfeld segment at the rental car counter when Jerry had a reservation and there was no car?

“See, you know how to take the reservation. You just don’t know how to hold the reservation. And that’s really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anyone can just take them.”

If overbooked, the hotel's/motel's only responsibility is to assist in locating another property and arranging any necessary transportation.

Bed & Breakfasts: Most bed and breakfasts never over book. Never. Never. Never.

They hold the room in good faith—no matter what—in exchange for the guest honoring their reservation and cancelation policy.

“And that’s really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anyone can just take them.”
