Mapping St. Louis History

Take a walk through St. Louis history and view historic maps, rare books, and images commemorating the city’s 250th birthday.

Mercantile Library is located on the 2 lower levels of Thomas Jefferson Library (you will walk in on the 3rd floor). Exhibitions can be viewed during normal Thomas Jefferson Library hours. Enjoy the exhibition by yourself or take a free, docent-led tour Saturdays at 11 or Sundays at 2. Group tours can also be arranged. Gardenland Express: Holiday Flower and Train Show
Dec 22 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Delighting visitors of all ages, Gardenland Express is an annual exhibit you won’t want to miss! Watch as G-scale trains of many eras travel along 900 feet of track through an enchanting miniature holiday landscape composed of festive decorations and fresh plants and flowers.

Watershed Cairns Exhibit

This new photography exhibit artfully highlights the St. Louis area’s close connection to rivers and streams. The images of the Watershed Cairns exhibit document important places in our regional watershed through vivid, large-scale photos of sculptural cairns made of glass. By naming and mapping sites of the photos, the exhibit offers visitors the chance to learn of the interconnection of these waters and the areas through which they pass.

St. Louis Ballet: The Nutcracker (2:30 show and Sugar Plum Fairy Luncheon)

Enjoy this classic holiday tale in a new way with St. Louis Ballet. Artistic Director Gen Horuchi gives the story new life with the spectacular talents of the St. Louis Ballet dancers, along with special effects including glitter, smoke, and even pyrotechnics.

Garden Glow Holiday Light Exhibit

Take an evening stroll through the Garden, surrounded by a spectacle of uniquely beautiful light installations. Hundreds of thousands of lights grace many of the Garden’s most iconic locations. Experience delightful traditional displays as well as “explosions of visual magic,” as the Garden itself describes.

Winter Wonderland at Tilles Park

Visit Tilles Park’s renowned Winter Wonderland holiday light display and be dazzled by more than 1 million twinkling lights that adorn the 75 acre park. The festive displays are sure to get you in the holiday spirit!

Winter Wonderland is open every night from November 26 – January 1 (excluding Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve) from 5:30 – 9:30.

Admission (credit and debit cards not accepted):

  • $20 – limousine
  • $40 – commercial transport van
  • $90 – tour bus

Carriage rides are also available every night the park is open. Saturdays are reserved for carriage rides; the park is closed to vehicular traffic.

  • Large private (up to 10) – $110
  • Large group coach – $12/person

Christmas Wonderland at Rock Spring Park

Be dazzled by more than 2.5 million lights adorning trees and fashioned into displays throughout the park. These festive light displays are sure to put you in the holiday spirit!

Enhance your experience with a carriage ride, available Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on a first come, first served basis (weather permitting). Admission for carriage rides are $30 for the first person and $5 for each additional person, regardless of age. Advanced reservations for other evenings may be made by calling Kris with Black Tie Carriage Company at (217) 242-1104.

There will be a special walk-only night Monday, December 1st. The park is open to vehicular traffic every other night.

Jazz St. Louis Big Band plays Ellington’s Nutcracker (7:30 show)

This fun jazz interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, arranged by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, features tunes such as “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Peanut Brittle Brigade” (replacing “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “March” respectively), as well as Ellington/Strayhorn classics including “Take the A-Train,” “Cottontail,” and “The Mooch,” among various others.
